DANNER - Mary Francis January 12, 1934 - January 11, 2018. Mary Francis Danner, a well-known Erie County social worker, died peacefully at Beachwood Continuing Care on January 11, 2018. She was 83 years old. Born in Buffalo, an only child, Mary Francis was the daughter of Edwin J and Catherine Danner. Edwin owned and operated a shoe store on Jefferson Ave and was of the family of Francis Lang (butcher), Gerhard Lang (brewer) and George Zimmerman (mayor). Catherine Danner, was of the Henel family, who owned the Henel Dairy and who provided the land on which the Academy of the Sacred Heart is built. She grew up in the University Park area of Buffalo where she lived her entire life. She attended St. Joseph's University Parish grammar school and was a 1951 graduate of the Academy of Sacred Heart. After earning her history degree in 1955 from D'Youville College, she took a job with the Erie County Department of Social Services visiting families receiving assistance in the Black Rock and Riverside neighborhoods of Buffalo. A few years later she got a scholarship to the University of Buffalo Department of Social Work from where she would receive a Masters in Social Work in 1963. This lead to a long career with the Erie County Department of Social Services where she rose to the level of Assistant Deputy Commissioner from where she retired in 1991 after 36 years of service. Mary has also been very active in the Catholic Church and has been a member of the Secular Franciscan Order and as well been active with the Sisters of Social Service for many decades. Surviving are many cousins and legions of lifelong friends.
Relatives and friends may visit LOMBARDO FUNERAL HOME (Northtowns Chapel), 885 Niagara Falls Blvd., near Eggert/Sheridan Dr., on Tuesday from 2-6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's University Church, 3269 Main St., Buffalo, on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock (please assemble at church).
